SANTA CLARA, CALIF. -- When Levi's Stadium opened on July 17, 2014 as the new home of the San Francisco 49ers pro football team, there was much excitement and some disappointment. San Franciscans were sorry to see their namesake team leave Candlestick Park where they played football from 1971 to 2013. With a whopping 42 years under their belt and tremendous support from local fans their scenic sports venue contained much nostalgia--but not enough to make up for the dated facilities that needed replacement.

San Francisco didn't manage to put together an attractive package to keep their team in their city / county and lost out altogether to Santa Clara. That's not to say Santa Clarans were 100% on board with the plan to construct a new stadium in their town. Nearby Great America theme park actually sued to stop the project, and neighboring Mountain View enacted new parking laws to keep Levis Stadium attendees from parking at their transit station for a ride to the new park which can accommodate 75,000 people.

The new stadium not only provides a home form San Francisco's football team but also serves as a concert venue and sports facility for a variety of sporting events ranging from soccer to concerts, ice hockey, wrestling and even the Super Bowl. The seating design of the stadium places approx. 65% of attendees in the lower bowl, currently giving it bragging rights as one of the largest in the NFL.

Getting there: at a quoted price of $40 for stadium parking, fans have the option of riding VTA Light Rail to the stadium. Great America station and VTA Lick Mill station, as well as the Amtrak and ACE station near California's Great America, all will get you there.
