Escondido in San Diego County isn't technically home to Wild Animal Park, a huge zoo where the animals roam in a more natural terrain. In an odd quirk of zoning, the City of San Diego managed to claim land approx. 30 minutes northeast of the city in an area that is next to Escondido. When you visit San Diego Wild Animal Park which is part of the San Diego Zoo facilities, the hotels of choice are in Escondido.

Escondido shown in the photos includes semi-mountainous, semi-desert terrain that enjoys year-round dry, pleasant weather. Summers are approx. 10 to 20 degrees warmer than the beaches nearby but that works in Escondido's favor during the winter months. It can be overcast and cool in downtown San Diego, but be sunny and shirt-sleeve not far away in Escondido.

The arts play an important part in Escondido, as evidenced by the numerous art organizations, museums, galleries and events. Amont them are: American Rose Theatre Antiques & Art Galleries, Arts Off Broadway, Broadway Theatre Arts Academy (BTAA), California Center for the Arts, Escondido Center Stage Productions, Distinction Gallery & Artist Studios, Escondido Art District, Escondido Arts Partnership, Escondido Children's Museum, Escondido Experience, Mingei International, Museum Niki de Saint Phalle's Queen Califia's Magical Circle, Patio Playhouse and Theatrx.

Entertainment includes both adult-oriented wineries you can visit and try some of the award-winning wines at places that include: Belle Marie Winery, Ferrara Winery, Orfila Vineyards and nearby Temecula Wine Country.

Sports activities can be enjoyed both inside and outdoors!

Outside: Daley Ranch, Dixon Lake, Lake Wohlford, Eagle Crest Golf Club, Escondido Country Club Escondido, Meadow Lake Golf Club, Reidy Creek Golf Course, and Vineyard at Escondido (golf course).

Escondido Sports Center includes a 22,000 square-foot skate park which is popular with locals and vacationers.

Event driven Escondido likes to have fun. Some of the highlights throughout the year include the summertime Cruisin' Grand, held every Friday evening in downtown Escondido from July to September. Sponsored by the downtown business association, the event focuses on American-made cars built in 1973 or earlier. Held on Grand, the event goes from 5- 9 p.m. downtownescondido.com

Other annual events include the Jaycees Christmas Parade, the annual Grape Day Parade & Festival, Second Saturday Art Walk, Farmer's Market every Tuesday, Old Escondido Walking Tours, Independence Day in Grape Park, and more!
