Fountain Valley is named for the underground springs that were discovered in the near-coastal region, once a rich area of farmlands. The farms have mostly given way to residences, commercial space, and shopping, but water still is important today in Fountain Valley. Both the Orange County Water & Sanitation Departments have a presence in the city and its land that overlooks the coast bordering Huntington Beach, its California coastal destination neighbor.

Fountain Valley is one of those places that would living a different persona if zoning had allowed it to capture some beach property. But since it only looks at the beach, much like neighboring Costa Mesa to its south looks at the beaches of Newport Beach, both cities have taken different roles in their livelihood. Known as business friendly, Fountain Valley is a shopping and dining destination for those living and working nearby. Located along the Interstate 405 (San Diego Freeway), Fountain Valley is home to major car manufacturing offices, has many larger department stores such as Costco, and dozens of popular California chain restaurants such as Mimi's, Stonefire Grill, Applebee's, Islands, and more.

There are only several hotels in Fountain Valley near the freeway. They are popular with business travelers especially, and operate in the budget to per diem traveler scale, though tourists do stay there, as well.
