Don’t nurse your New Year’s hangover too long. Sure, we’re only a few days into 2013, but the party isn’t over. In just over a month the fair season gets into full swing with the launch of two biggies–the National Date Festival and Riverside County Fair, and the Cloverdale Citrus Fair beginning on February 15. At the Date Festival in Indio the highlights include dates, camel & ostrich races, destruction derby and the famous Queen Scheherazade. At the Citrus Festival in Cloverdale there’s a premier wine contest and lots of healthy citrus foods and drinks.

There are well over 50 county fairs in California each year and each one is unique.  In Santa Rosa the Sonoma County Fair has the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest which always garners international media attention, as does the Calaveras County Fair with the Jumping Frog Jubilee contest.  In Del Mar the San Diego County Fair is hosted near the Pacific Ocean where the surf meets the turf. That event lasts nearly a month (June 8 – July 4, 2013).  Fairs include carnival rides, midways with games, prizes, food booths, vendor expos, featured bands and endless entertainment. Following 2012 holiday vacations, there’s no better way to celebrate the new year than a fair.
