See California’s Magical Trees

Ranking third in the U.S. under Texas, then Alaska, California has 101 million acres of land with 32 million of those acres forested with trees. Our trees are pretty special. California claims the oldest, tallest and biggest trees in the world! So what’s the big deal if tree disease (confined to 15 out California’s 58 counties) claims 71 million pines and oaks among billions of trees?

The threat is undeniable — Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency with 80+ federal, state and local agencies, electric utilities and organizations forming Tree Mortality Task Force. Ancient Tree Archive has climbed giant Sequoias and redwoods, clipping samples and cloning them with a 3-4% success rate in plantings along the Oregon coast.

In December Californians make their annual trek to General Grant, the Nation’s Christmas Tree, and enjoy tree lighting ceremonies this week:
