A friend from Sacramento came to Southern California to join others in honoring a tourism great, Werner Escher, who passed away recently. You may not know the name, but Werner was “Mr. South Coast Plaza.” For decades the global ambassador attended ‘fam’ tours and promotional events to make foreign media, buyers and promoters aware that California offers a premier shopping destination where guests can immerse themselves in designer brand boutiques at Costa Mesa’s mall. If he could make it a global destination, how hard can it be to make beach shopping malls and districts icons for tourists? I took my friend to the new Pacific City in Huntington Beach to explore this topic.
Pacific City (gopacificcity.com) shown in the photo, was packed on a typical Spring weekend. Downtown merchants a few blocks away have complained that business is down since Pacific City opened.
