This weekend on April 22, 2018 the nation’s largest open streets event connects the cities of San Dimas, La Verne, Pomona and  Claremont! Streets will be closed to cars and open for cyclists, pedestrians, runners and skaters to use as a recreational space!

The free cicLAvia (ciclavia.org) event from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. encompasses 6.5 miles on portions of these streets: Bonita in San Dimas, Fulton, Arrow Highway, College and 1st Streets in Claremont.

They’ve put together a sight-seeing guide:

  • SAN DIMAS: Frank G Bonelli Regional Park with Puddingstone Lake, 120 Via Verde (1 mile from the route)
  • LA VERNE: La Verne United Methodist Church, 3205 D St. (0.7mi)
The Doors at La Verne Public Library by craftsman Ruben Guajardo.
  • POMONA: Mi Cafecito, 101 S Main St. (2.5mi) | Lily’s Tacos, 901 N Garey Ave. (2mi) | The Antique Row, E 2nd Street (3mi) | Glass House Record Store, 248 2nd Street (3mi) | American Museum of Ceramic Art, 399 N Garey Ave. (0.2mi) | NHRA Motorsports Museum, 1101 W McKinley Ave. (2.2mi)
  • CLAREMONT: The Back Abbey burgers, 128 N Oberlin Ave. (0.4mi) | Bert & Rocky’s Cream Co, 242 Yale Ave. (0.5mi) | Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Gardens, 1500 N College Ave. (1.8mi) | James Turrell’s Skyspace on the Pomona College Campus, Draper Courtyard, 6th & College Way (1.5mi)

The public loves, loves, loves the Open Streets car-free events, but they’re expensive to produce and require many volunteers. In October 2017 Berkeley Open Streets was canceled to due poor air quality.

While there actually seem to be less California open streets events than in past years, you can still find some if you look. Here are the Open Streets 2018 events we’ve uncovered to date.
