California Midsummer Night’s Dreamin’

If you wondering what’s shakin’ this summer, California dreaming is alive and well with more than 400 days of Shakespeare performed outdoors from the mountains to the sea in at least 50 cities this year.

Everyone’s heard of California Dreaming and it turns out that the top play in 2018 is Midsummer Night’s Dream, with more than 70 performances, and over 20% of presentations in the state.

  • Of the three categories his plays were divided into, Shakespeare’s Comedies slightly edge out Tragedies, with Histories not far behind in 2018.
  • The top 3 plays performed in California in 2018 are:
    1. Midsummer Night’s Dream (comedy)
    2. Tempest (comedy) | Much Ado About Nothing (comedy) – tie
    3. The Winter’s Tale (comedy)
  • The biggest traveling act is Shakespeare by the Sea, hitting over 20 Southern California cities with free, outdoor performances this summer.
  • San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre offers a much anticipated Shakespeare summer season at the outdoor, Lowell Davies Festival Theatre. Tickets often sell out.
  • Outdoor venues for Shakespeare productions range from the high Sierras (Lake Tahoe) to lawns overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Seal Beach, San Pedro and Rancho Palos Verdes.
