You probably know a lot more about great pho (soup) restaurants and events in California than you do about Aebleskivers (Danish donuts.) However, the public has a chance to see how many of the berry-drenched pastries they can scarf down on Sat. Sept. 21 & Sun Sept. 22, 2019 at the Free Aebleskiver Eating Contest, part of the fun at Solvang Danish Days. For those who prefer to eat at your own pace, there’s also a ticketed Aebleskiver Breakfast, plus free Aebleskiver Cooking Demo planned for both days!

Solvang Danish Days includes a parade, axe throwing (7 throws for $5,) a Viking encampment, Rune reader who reads stones that are said to predict future comings, and delightful vendor market filled with lots of treasures.

In addition to Solvang’s Dane-focused event, in San Diego County Vista Viking Festival takes place the same weekend.

Other great heritage fests coming up in September include:

GREEK: Greek festivals in Stockton, Santa Cruz, Cardiff by the Sea, Vallejo, Pasadena, San Juan Capistrano, Concord, Elk Grove, Lancaster, San Francisco and Modesto.

GERMAN / BAVARIAN: Oktoberfest — happening in too many cities to mention. It’s all over the place beginning in September.

LATIN: Salsa Festival in Redwood City, The Pepper Festival & Hot Sauce Expo in Auburn, Tomato & Pepper Fest at Windsor Farmer’s Market are few spicy tomato events to check out as well as the Mole & Mariachi Festival in Santa Cruz.

POLYNESIAN: Napa Valley Aloha Festival and San Diego’s Pacific Island Festival at Mission Beach offer flavors of the islands at California’s Polynesian festivals.
