Birding Festivals and Bird Marts

While there are major differences between birding festivals and bird festivals or marts, both have huge fan bases! This weekend at the Foothill Bird Fanciers Annual Exotic Bird Mart at Placer County Fairgrounds in Roseville cages are invited (leave your binoculars at home.)  For a nominal fee Dr. Scott McDonald will trim your bird’s nails, wings and give it a general check up. Breeders can bring their birds to determine their sex.  Additional bird events take place this fall in Pleasanton, Sonora, San Diego, Granada Hills, Modesto, Ontario and Pomona.

At birding festivals leave the cage at home, please, but DO bring binoculars when you come to watch swans, snowgeese or sandhill cranes. Though we’ve seen small cages at wetlands and wildlife refuges to protect birds that are breeding and would be eaten up by fox, coyotes and other animals the birds are free to come & go — and they do so.

Upcoming birding festivals

  • Monterey Bay Birding Festival September 24-27, 2015
  • Lodi Sandhill Crane Festival November 6-8, 2015
