Birds are the only vertebrates that have feathers. All birds are warm-blooded, and they lay eggs. Adaptations such as hollow bones enable most birds to fly, although there are flightless birds, including the ostrich. There are nearly 10,000 bird species in the world.

According the American Veterinary Medical Association there are somewhere between 7 and 8 million birds kept as pets in the United States--around 3.1%. Numbers vary based on who conducts the survey, as many birds go unregistered and never receive vet car. Birds are the third most popular companion pet behind dogs and cats.
