California Food Revolution

Published on: August 27, 2012

California is the top producer of many of America’s favorite foods such as milk, dairy products, vegetables, grapes, wine, and nuts. When things go wrong such as a recent recall of California Romaine lettuce (packaged as Tanimura & Antle) or the shut down of a dairy cattle slaughterhouse in Hanford which is now re-opened a week later, it points to our vulnerability in relying on others to provide our food. California is like any other state–it is an equal opportunity consumer subject to the practices (good or bad) of those growing the meals we eat.

Perhaps Californians are getting sick (literally) of bad food, and are taking a stance. The Renaissance is can be evidenced in 2012 more than ever.

  • California now has more farmers markets than any other state, just under 1,000, where shoppers can go direct to their farm sources and get to know the growers.
  • California will vote in the November 2012 election to require labeling of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and foods that have wreaked havoc on the health of young and old alike. California Ballot Proposition 37, if passed, will make California the first state in the U.S. to require labeling of most foods made with genetically modified organisms. 50 countries require such labeling already.
  • This fall California cities host and incredible banquet of special food events.  In addition to the popular Oktoberfests and Greek festivals, and lobster fests, cities across the state– San Francisco, San Diego, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Pasadena, Newport Beach and many more are hosting special food and dining events that take place for just a few days, a week, or an entire month. They showcase local cuisine and usually offer discounted prices or fixed menu items.
  • The State of California declared September as Food Literacy month.
