Tiki Highway Filled With Twists and Turns

Published on: August 27, 2012

What did you do this past weekend? If you attended a tiki festival, you would have seen pretty girls, outrageously beautiful cars, and tiki dudes carving to their heart’s content. The 2nd annual Tiki Highway Festival took place in Sunset Beach at a cool place called Don the Beachcomber, based on the original restaurant in Hollywood dating back to the 1930s.

A Prohibition bootlegger who moved to Hollywood from Texas in the 1930s opened a bar called Don’s Beachcomber Cafe in 1934, then changed it to Don The Beachcomber. He mixed potent rum cocktails in his tropical bar and became a favorite with Hollywood stars. Cantonese dishes served with flair and Don’s famous Zombie Cocktail were a few trademarks to bring the flavor of the islands to California. The owner loved his place so much, he adopted the name Donn Beach.  Today you can rekindle the Polynesian lifestyle with foods, entertainment and drinks. But the Tiki Highway Festival only happens once each year. This was the 2nd annual event. Keep posted at donthebeachcomber.com for next year’s tiki gathering. Here are some Polynesian festivals in California this year that you might be able to catch.
