California Gold Days

If gold hadn’t been discovered in California in the mid-1800s by individuals who found value to this precious metal, the state would be a far different place today. Native Americans were very familiar with the existence of gold but most found it of little or no use in their daily lives. An influx of rough & ready immigrants from around the globe rushed to California to find gold. Along with the gold-seekers came a host of opportunities for entrepreneurs making their fortunes selling everything from shovels and panning supplies, to beef, turkeys, lumber, clothing and necessities.

California’s numerous gold rush festivals celebrate the many places where gold was discovered. Here are a few:

  • Greenville Gold Digger Days (in photos) features a parade, panning for gold and an entire day of old-fashioned entertainment July 16, 2016.
  • Plumas Eureka State Park Gold Discovery Days July 16-17 includes many activities from the gold rush era, including wagon rides through the town of Johnsville and gold panning.
  • Columbia State Historic Park hosts an old-fashioned Gold Rush Days the 2nd Saturday of the month. If you missed it on July 9 it returns on August 13, then September 10 and October 8.
