This weekend one of several California chicken cities (where the fowl have the run of the town) celebrates the town crier and pet. Fair Oaks Chicken Festival on Sept. 20, 2014 pays homage to chickens and the village they call home. Colonized around 1895, chickens have been a part of the Fair Oaks way of life for as long as anyone can remember. At the festival where people buy chicken adorned ceramics, pillows, and even souvenir chicken hats, you can do the chicken dance and participate in the chicken barbecue contest (“locals” are off limits!)
Other chicken-friendly destinations include Yuba City and Arroyo Grande.
