The Courtland Pear Fair on July 27, 2014 is the first of several pear festivals in California. However, don’t wait to get great pears–they’re in season now. The Elliot family (right photo) known for their Stillwater Orchards in the Sacramento Delta growing region, reports that this year’s California Bartlett pear crop is outstanding due to a mild dry spring. While statewide the pear crop is down from last year, they are adding Organic Bartletts to their inventory. They also have Stark Crimson, the first full red pear of the season. Next up will be Golden Bosc around July 28 followed by French Butter, Seckels, Comice and Forelle by early to mid-August. For the majority of us who won’t make it to the pear fair, head for a market or store to get your fair share of pears.
