Mendocino County drives are filled with an animal feast for the eyes. Sure, there’s fog. Yes, you have to pay attention to avoid hitting the critters as they cross the road. But the encounters with a variety of furry wildlife is great for those who have had little exposure to the wilder side of California.  The photos above were taken along S Highway 1 on the outskirts of Point Arena.

Although California is one of the most biologically diverse areas in the world its extraordinary diversity is being lost in many important habitats throughout the state. On average, over 20% of the naturally occurring species are classified as endangered, threatened, or “of special concern”– more endangered species than any other state! The main cause is an ever-increasing human population that is degrading the environment at an ever-accelerating rate.
