When you visit the Folsom City Zoo and meet Stinky Pete the skunk, an African Grey parrot named Mesa, black bear buddies Marty (shot in the hip at the age of 6) and Woody, a graceful wolf named Yucca, and tiger Misty (one of several found starving and tethered to 3 foot chains at an illegal animal breeding facility in Southern California), you start to form a picture. You quickly learn that zoo  residents didn’t have it so easy before they came–Gus (upper right photo) was rescued from a Premarin foal auction in Canada, born to a horse used in the manufacturing of estrogen Premarin. It doesn’t take long to see that Folsom’s animal sanctuary, its zookeepers and volunteers have big hearts. They’re committed to helping animals who were rejected pets, injured or orphaned in the wild or rescued from deplorable conditions and situations. When taken in (usually for life,) the animals in Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary are given names, plenty of healthy food, medical care when needed, and a comfortable home–practically all are non-releasable. Even though they are wild at heart, they’ll touch your heart when you read their stories (posted on signs) and watch them do their thing. If you feel inspired, you can even contribute beyond the gate fee of around $5-6, to help feed one of these creatures.  Read more…>
