Pictured is the Calico-Odessa Railway train once used to cart silver from the mines! You can ride it daily at Calico Ghost Town in Yermo, Calif.

As kids growing up in a really small town, we entertained ourselves by placing pennies on the railroad track and waiting for trains to come by and smash them. Perhaps you have your own train memories. There are many.  If you have access to trains this weekend, you might consider giving your dad a ride on one.

Some of our favorite train rides in California include:

Replica Red Car in San Pedro where for approx. $1 you can ride all day.
Roaring Camp Railroads (Felton near Santa Cruz). This is where the engineer has to get out of the train and clear the track as you head up the hill for Bear Mountain. Also try the Beach Train ride.
Skunk Train offers stunning scenery on the North Coast from Willits and Fort Bragg.
Napa Valley Wine Train is a culinary experience with plenty of wine  to sample along the way.

Haven’t tried these but we want to:

Niles Canyon Railway in Fremont and Sunol
Fillmore Western Railway
