This week in Winters, California a unique festival celebrates the city’s unforgettable 1892 shaker. The Winters Earthquake Festival on Aug. 28 points fingers and lays blame on the town by declaring “It’s our fault!”Now that’s taking ownership. California has experienced its share of deadly earthquakes and there will be many more, no doubt. So here’s a list of the deadliest earthquakes in the state…

  • 3,000 dead San Francisco Apr. 18, 1906
  • 115 dead Long Beach on Mar. 11, 1933
  • 65 dead, more than 2,000 injured in San Fernando on Feb.9, 1971
  • 63 dead; 3,737 injured in Loma Prieta quake on Oct. 17, 1989
  • 57 dead, more than 9,000 injured in Northridge Jan. 17, 1994 6.7 magnitude
  • 40 dead at San Juan Capistano on December 8, 1812
