Exhibit Photographs of American Presidents in Long Beach 

  • 1911:  William H. Taft became the first sitting US President to visit Long Beach.
  • 1928: Herbert Hoover, an Iowa native, campaigned for president in front of 100,000 people at an Iowa Picnic in Bixby Park.
  • 1942:  Franklin D. Roosevelt visited Long Beach’s Douglas Aircraft facility to see B-17 Bombers and C-47 Transport planes being built for World War II.
  • 1960: John F. Kennedy shook hands with supporters at Long Beach Airport.
  • 1960: Lyndon Johnson received a key to the city from Long Beach Mayor Ed Wade during his vice presidential campaign.
  • 1974: Ailing Richard Nixon was visited by President Gerald Ford at Memorial Medical Center.
  • 1976: Jimmy Carter shook  hands with supporters at Bixby Park in June of 1976
  • 1983: Ronald Reagan spoke at a Republican candidate fundraiser alongside the Spruce Goose.
  • 1996: Bill Clinton appeared with Mayor Beverly O’Neill.
