  • CHEESE – California’s artisan cheesemakers don’t want the price of milk to rise again. They claim it may force them to relocate their businesses to other states. Wisconsin is reportedly eyeing the situation, as it would like to reclaim its former title as the top dairy producer, a position it enjoyed until 1993 when California pushed the dairy state out of first place. In March Artisan Cheese Festival is held in Petaluma.
  • WALNUTS –  have been stolen because they garner high prices. The $1.3 billion walnut industry has seen theft become such a problem that growers are hiring security guards to watch the fields. Here’s a list of walnut and almond festivals!
  • ALMONDS  -Almonds became California’s  #2 crop, under milk last year. In 2013 the California almond industry is experiencing its worst year in 30 years scrambling to find bees to pollinate the almond trees.
  • STRAWBERRIES – just received a $1 million boost from the California Strawberry Commission, a state government agency partnering to create the Strawberry Sustainability Research and Education Center at Cal Poly – San Luis Obispo.
