Hats are Where It’s At for Weekend Fun

As I began my day with a cup of Starbucks coffee the news started me thinking about hats. One headline said, “74-year-old man wearing MAGA (Make America Great Again) hat says woman berated him at Palo Alto Starbucks for supporting Trump.”

Another news article said that Sgt. Cesilia Valdovinos is suing the US Army for making her take off her hijab to pass inspection — women soldiers are not allowed to wear their long hair down.

While hats may evoke responses from some and raise others’ dander enough to sue a government military branch, they’re everywhere — you can’t escape them! In fact, hats can be your best friend to help prevent sunburn, skin cancer, early aging and keep the sun out of your eyes. Be sure to take your hat to these great weekend events shown in photos…

California Hat Optional Weekend

  • CLOVIS: Big Hat Days April 6-7, 2019. According to Clovis Chamber of Commerce officials, this event was created in 1938 to honor and celebrate hardworking Clovis cowboys and farmers who wore their hat to block the dirt and sun from their faces. Attendees wear big, bold hats such as a Pharaoh’s Nemes Headdress.
  • BAKERSFIELD: Kern County Scottish Games & Gathering. See bands march, wearing their finest Glengarry or Balmoral caps.
  • LIVINGSTON: At Livingston’s Kite Festival, which often includes a parade, you’ll see a variety of whimsical scarves and and head apparel.
  • PACIFIC GROVE: Good Old Day includes a parade with old-fashioned bonnets.
  • LINDSAY: Even the Orange in Orange Blossom Festival wears a ball cap.
  • LATON: Laton Rodeo Queen Whitney Iskenderian wears a silver-tooled tiara on her cowboy hat.
  • IRWINDALE:  The Original Renaissance Pleasure Faire is a fashion parade of berets, elf hoods, cloche hats, squires caps and king’s crowns.
