Have California Beaches Really Lost Their Fun?

The famous California beaches that many of you will visit this summer, are becoming more regulated, inch by inch, day by day. Are they losing their fun? My parents sent me a newspaper article from New York Times about the big stink over bonfire rings at Southern California beaches. It was like 100 other articles I’ve read this past month talking about Gidget and Moondoggie, Dean Torrence, Americana and apple pie. While I’ve written about and fought for the bonfire rings for over a decade, I am starting to think about the other side of the coin–the people who have health problems and asthma from the smoke that these belching, burning bonfires blaze into the sky. Do people have rights not to breathe toxic fumes, or is pollution just a part of being human and living in a congested environment where millions of people share the same space?

Here are rules you’ll find at  many beaches. Some rules seem to make sense, while others may just tick  you off!
