Most of us celebrate the new year for just a day, but in Fresno the annual Hmong New Year (billed as the largest in the World) goes for a week from December 26, 2016 to January 1, 2017. Held at Fresno County Fairgrounds, the public is invited to the colorful festival of foods, games, costumes, music and dance.  Other cities that celebrate include Sacramento and Merced, which holds its Hmong New Year 2017 at the Merced County Fairground on December 16, 17 and 18, 2016. Call (209) 384-7384 for information on that event.

Hmong are an ethnic group from mountainous regions of China, Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. Beginning in 1975 after the Vietnam War Hmong refugees began resettling in the United States. The largest Hmong-American community is in Saint Paul, Minnesota (30,000), followed by Fresno (24,500), then Sacramento (16,700.)
