The Indians (from India) don’t get much publicity in California when it comes to celebrating. Cities and chambers of commerce typically embrace festivals relating to German (Oktoberfest), Spanish (Cinco de Mayo, Fiestas Patrias and Day of the Dead), Chinese (New Year) and Irish (St. Patrick’s Day) cultures, as well as Indigineous Peoples such as Native Americans and their pow wows. In fact, while Halloween and Day of the Dead events are brewing, many are busy preparing for Diwali on October 19, 2017.
Celebrated throughout the world, Diwali (“row of lamps” in Sanskrit,) is a festival of light to keep out darkness and evil by lighting candles, fireworks, dressing up in festive Indian attire and holding parties, banquets and festivals.
