Though countless attempts have been made to paint a picture of John Chapman who became known as Johnny Appleseed, there was never an actual portrait of the man who reportedly wore second-hand, ragged clothes, went barefoot, and sometimes wore his cooking pan on his head during his travels. Attributed with planting nurseries in five states, the small, thin man who lived from 1774 to 1845 is celebrated on September 26, Johnny Appleseed Day.

In California’s Gold Country a special marketing region in the Sierra foothills comprised of 55 farms under the umbrella of Apple Hill annually celebrates the legend with great apples. Many farms grow apples you can pick, ciders you can taste, and some host special events for Johnny Appleseed Day held this year on Sunday, September 21.  At Rainbow Orchards guests are invited to tour the cider mill and collect apple seeds from the apple pulp with tour guide Johnny Appleseed.
