If you’ve never been to a funkfest, it’s a music and dance festival with ample doses of street performances and funky fans. From the kids’ zone of funkativity to bands with ‘funk’ in their names, the event that began as a free street festival in Long Beach  now charges $20 to attend. It also relocated from downtown streets to the Queen Mary ship where it takes place on Labor Day (Sept. 1, 2014.)  Tickets, queenmary.com

It’s hard to define funk but here’s what one source has to say about it:  Funk originated in the 1960s when African-American musicians created a rhythmic, danceable new form of music through a mixture of soul music, jazz, and R&B. Funk de-emphasizes melody and harmony and brings a strong rhythmic groove of electric bass and drums to the foreground. Like much African-inspired music, funk typically consists of a complex groove with rhythm instruments such as electric guitar, electric bass, Hammond organ, and drums playing interlocking rhythms.
