Would you know how to cut your own wood with an axe if you had to? How about starting a fire for warmth and cooking food? Speaking of food, could you forage for edibles in the local area if necessary? Two festivals this weekend offer hands-on opportunities to help Californians survive if things should go terribly wrong due to some catastrophe.

  • McCloud Lumberjack Fiesta July 29-31, 2016 celebrates the region’s heritage and lifestyle with contests that include sawing, cutting wood, and archery, to name a few activities mixed in with modern fun.
  • Boonville’s Not So Simple Living Fair (notsosimple.info) July 29-31 gets down to the brass tacks of ‘living off the land’. Bring your orchard apples and press them for cool drinks, take a seminar with Starhawk and learn how to make fire from scratch, use animal fur, forage for food, go organic, off the grid, or just learn about the possibilities available to each of us as we discover it is possible to survive without all the modern trappings.
