The waves are rolling in this week at Santa Cruz beaches (shown), while 45 miles north in a place known for waves that can peak at 50 feet or higher officials are on alert for the call of the wild at Mavericks. The Titans of Mavericks (titansofmavericks.com) annual surfing event Call Alert is: Potential Swell. If things continue to show promise, potential is high that the event will run and next, the event is on.

What does that mean? An all-star cast of the surfing world’s boldest & best Big Wave surfers  will get the call. They have 24 hours to come from around the globe to San Mateo County beaches in California to compete. The window of opportunity for monstrous waves begins in November and closes in March. Will Mavericks happen in 2017? 30 competitors, 8 alternates and 8 wildcards are hoping for the call.
