Annual National Walking Day created by the American Heart Association (heart.org) takes place on Wednesday April 3, 2013. Americans are encouraged to lace up their sneakers and take at least 30 minutes out of their day to get up and walk. It’s a great way to raise awareness of the importance of physical activity and to give your family, friends and co-workers a friendly push toward a healthier life. Many will carry on with their regular walking routines but at least one city has plans to help push you along. Bring your little ones, your dog (on leash) or just yourself! All are welcome to Redwood City Parks walking event. The group will meet at the Community Activities Building, 1400 Roosevelt Avenue in Redwood City at 9 am on April 3 for a morning walk. If you are unable to meet up, remember that just 30 minutes every day lowers your risk for heart disease, and puts you in a better mood!  Not all walks are the same–if you’re out of shape or just trying to get into a routine, pick the terrain and interest that will keep you motivated. For the foodie or shopaholic, it’s OK to walk around malls or restaurant rows snacking on ice cream, as long as you’re out there keeping a steady pace.
