A week ago with fingers crossed sled dog enthusiasts hoped for snow. But there was “no joy in Mudville,” taken from a 19th century poem about a baseball player who strikes out at bat. Two of California’s most unique and challenging sporting events, Mavericks Big Wave Surf Championship and Siskiyou Sled Dog Races, have not held their 2015 contests due to lack of waves and lack of snow. The countdown is on for Titans of Mavericks surfing event which closes its window of opportunity to call a contest by March 31. Brian Overfelt, owner of the Old Princeton Landing, who is in charge of event relations at Mavericks surf contest said, “Maintaining high standards and putting on the best possible big wave event may mean not hosting it every year.” Likewise, after several cancellations of the sled dog races the event planner posted sentiments to describe the situation: “Our race site is currently dirt and asphalt, birds are migrating north, snow levels are 2000 feet above our race site in steep and rocky terrain unsuitable for dog sled races.”  More than 10 ski resorts in California have closed recently due to deteriorating conditions.
