While the most watched parade in the world, Pasadena’s Tournament of Roses – Rose Parade, prepares for its big day with volunteers signing up to decorate floats, the buzz around town this week is about the really fun, ‘git down parade that is pretty much the opposite of the huge event 6 weeks later.  The Occasional Doo Dah Parade is celebrating its 40th year with much fanfare. Not only is it affordable and easy to be in it, you can also watch it without heavy-duty strategies for getting there due to millions of fans. Some actually prefer the Doo Dah Parade over the Rose Parade and media giants have called it one of the 50 Places You Must Visit Before You Die.

In 2017 the Queen is a guy, Imani Phoenix. He loves the parade’s idea of stepping outside your comfort zone which is something he’s very familiar with, being a ‘gay black’.  His thoughts on wearing the crown & gown: “I believe in order to wear a crown you have to have gone through something and learn humility.” Like so many queens before him, he plans to make the Doo Dah Parade proud of their selection.
