You can smell the sauerkraut in the air, see the pretty maidens with their long braided hair, and hear the clink of beer steins as the polka band invites you to count in rhythm, Eins, Zwei, Drei, g’suffa. We’ve been asked to give a shout out to several festivals as the season begins (September through October.) Among the Oktoberfest celebrations worth your consideration are:

  • Oktoberfest in Lake Arrowhead Village Sept 27 – October 26, Saturdays 12pm-7pm, Sundays 12pm – 5pm. In a pristine mountain setting next to an alpine lake is a Bavarian village that loves to celebrate. Bring a jacket for cool nights if you go! See: lakearrowheadoktoberfest.com
  • Oktoberfest at Fort Mason, San Francisco on September 25, 2014. An event produced by REAL Germans from the German American Chamber of Commerce includes Schweinebraten – Roasted Pork with Beer Sauce, Bratwurst on a bed of Sauerkraut and Potato Salad, plus beer, of course! Taste some authentic recipes and party in style! See: gaccwest.com
  • Oaktoberfest in the Dimond is the Oakland-spun, multicultural event in which Mayor Jean Quan taps the first keg in a traditional Munich style Oktoberfest kick off on October 4, 2014. Bavarian Big Band, Deutscher Musikverein of San Francisco, takes the stage while Golden Gate Bavarian Dancers take to the streets. See oaktoberfest.org
  • Oktoberfest in Dana Point October 11-12 at Lantern Bay Park boasts more German & Specialty Brews on tap than any other Oktoberfest in Southern California. If true, there’s more than “Bud” for you! See danapointoktoberfest.com
