With nearly half of California’s households owning dogs not only are the owners impacted… so are their neighbors when the fireworks go off. Loud booms, bangs and pops are enough to cause dogs to bark their heads off, adding more noise to the stress levels that already exist. Animal control officials across the country see a 30-60% increase in lost pets each year during the 4th of July holiday — July 5th is one of the busiest days of the year for shelters.  Experts in the field of animal care offer this advice: Put pets in a well ventilated house and create safe havens such as a comfortable box to hide in during the 4th of July. You can also consider hiring a pet sitter if you leave your family animal home alone. American Veterinary Association recommends closing all doors and windows to curb the noise from fireworks while turning on a radio to create noise distractions. They also say you should take pictures of your pets to have, just in case they go missing.  Other tips offered by Milk-bone and Milo’s Kitchen, makers of doggy pet treats:

  • Take Fido on a Joy Ride in your car.
  • Make crate time “Treat Time”.
  • Provide creature comforts such as blankets and toys to play with.
  • Reward positive behaviors with pet treats and praise.
