This weekend, January 15-18, 2016, Pier 39 in San Francisco celebrates the Return of the Sea Lions with free tours and sea lion watching. Not always a blessing to fisherman, the local yacht clubs and boat owners are constantly struggling to keep the barking pinnipeds off their vessels moored in the harbor. Popular with tourists, Pier 39 began welcoming the creatures to K-dock after the 6.9 magnitude Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 rocked the Bay Area. That’s when the sea lions began arriving in large numbers.
There are four major festivals held annually at Pier 39 (pier39.com)
