- Expect to see smiles bigger than a Cheshire cat’s grin this weekend when Irvine Park Railroad launches its annual pumpkin patch, complete with train rides, crafts, games, bounce houses, face painting, cotton candy, hay rides and fun for everyone. Harvest season has begun and the much-anticipated celebrations ranging from food and wine festivals with grape stomps to kiddie carnivals give adults an excuse to act (or feel) like youngsters once again. Go out and get your face painted between September 20 and October 31! Irvine Park Railroad is a miniature train ride adults can fit into.

- Fillmore & Western Railway Pumpkliner (fwry.com) in Ventura County offers train rides to a pumpkin patch with games, food and fun on weekends in October.
- In San Diego County the Pacific Southwest Railway Pumpkin Express (psrm.org) in Campo, Calif. takes families on a vintage train ride to the Great Pumpkin Patch on Saturdays & Sundays October 12-27, 2013.
