Mammoth Mountain reports it now has the most snow of any ski resort in California and the country with a base depth of 130-245″ and it’s still growing. Is California out of the drought yet — and did anyone predict this wet winter?

Officially, California remains in a drought emergency until Gov. Brown issues a change to the formal declaration from several years ago. The numbers from the state’s winter snow and rain season won’t be finalized for a couple  months. For now, more than 40% of California is no longer in drought, data shows.

What were the predictions for the season? In June through September 2016 news headlines read:

  • La Nina is on the way — don’t expect California’s drought to ease.
  • California Forecasters in Crapshoot Predicting Winter Weather.
  • Weather forecasters don’t have a strong sense of what the season will hold for the state.
  • Generally, a mild winter is once again expected.
  • There’s always uncertainty with climate forecasts. They’re not the same as weather forecasts; that’s why they’re given in a probabilistic sense. – Climate Prediction Center
