Sacramento is a vibrant city to visit any time of the year. If you’re like me, it instantly strikes you as familiar–like an old friend. Locals cherish its history while embracing the future as  the epicenter of decision making at the California State Capitol. Hospitality is key–there’s world class food & beverage options in dining, a thriving theater arts scene, shopping and so much more to entertain the millions of visitors who come for a variety of reasons.

During the holidays Sacramento sparkles with seasonal things to see and do. We simply can’t cover them all but do look forward to visiting and enjoying some holiday traditions.

Sacramento Christmas

On the streets of one of California’s most authentic, historic places, guests delight in Old Sacramento Theatre of Lights, the recreation of the 1823 poem — A Visit from St. Nicholas, more popularly known as ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.

Ice skating in Sacramento has been a holiday tradition for more than 20 years. Put on your scarf and mittens to get in the holiday mood at this special event in the heart of the city!

Sacramento Ballet’s The Nutcracker starts this week and continues till just before Christmas.

Capitol City Yacht Club recently held its annual boat parade of lights that travels under the famous Alfred Eichler-designed Tower Bridge. There are also plenty of boat parades throughout the state to enjoy.

Sacramento Santa Parade takes to the streets this week for a delightful event filled with marching bands, floats, antique vehicles, and of course, Santa Claus!

See the Capitol Christmas Tree. The Governor annually lights the tree next to the Capitol in a ceremony featuring special dignitaries and children. The tree remains lit nightly through Christmas.

Sacramento & West Sacramento both offer Christmas train rides that are so popular, they usually sell out fast. Nevertheless, you can still hop aboard an Amtrak train and head for a variety of great destinations–such as Yosemite National Park. All aboard!
