You can mix and mingle with over a million strangers at Southern California beaches this weekend, but for those who prefer intimate crowds (of around 1,000)  and a place where everybody knows your name, head for Salida. It’s a community where you can usually find a parking spot, even when the Town and Country Parade and Festival arrives August 23, 2014. Highlights in past festivals have included an appearance of “Big Red”, the Save Mart giant shopping cart that can comfortably seat four adults waving to the crowd. Then there’s Al & Wally, those enthusiastic “nuts” from Modesto Nuts minor league baseball team.  Where’s Salida? It’s in Stanislaus County in the Central Valley. It is known for nuts–the kind you eat.
