Saving History: Laguna Beach Lifeguard Tower

As you drive through Laguna Beach on the Pacific Coast Highway, you’ll usually come to a stop at a traffic light in front of the white, hexagonal shaped lifeguard tower building overlooking the Pacific Ocean at Main Beach. Next to it may be an American flag waving in the wind, and there are usually people sitting on park benches next to it, strolling, or playing games of basketball. The iconic white tower is one of the most photographed (and painted in artwork) images in the city. But there was a time when the tower nearly came to extinction and was slated for demolition.
