Swedish is the most commonly spoken Scandinavian language in California according the US Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. On April 18 & 19, 2015 in Thousand Oaks the annual Scandinavian Festival gives the public a taste of the cultures of Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. If you choose to dig deeper into the cultures of Northern Europe head north to Kingsburg for the Swedish Festival held May 14-16. After that event check out the windmills in Solvang where Danish Days is celebrated September 18 to 20. Knowing very little about Scandinavian culture as I watched a PBS (subtitle) series, Borgen, I was fascinated that every time they walked out the door they said “hi hi”. Apparently “hi” (spelled hej) means hello and if you say it twice — “hi hi” (hej hej) — you are saying goodbye.
