The holiday season doesn’t end on December 25. In fact, for many consumers the week after Christmas is more than just an opportunity to exchange things that are broken or don’t fit.  Target, Macy’s, Best Buy and other stores open early on Dec. 26, a busy day for merchandise returns and bargain shopping.  A survey from National Retail Federation discovered that:

  • 65.9% of holiday shoppers said they are planning to shop – both browsing and buying – retailers’ after-Christmas sales.
  • 47.2% of shoppers said they would shop at a store.
  • 43.1% will shop online the week after Christmas.
  • Nearly six in 10 millennials age 18-24 years will shop after Christmas both in stores (59.2%) and online (59.3%).
  • 41.9% say they will save gift cards for sales and promotions.

Other trends for the holiday season:

  • Total annual returns will reach $260.5 billion, roughly 8% of total retail sales.
  • Retail return fraud is expected to be up about 0.5% to around 3.5% this year.
  • Return fraud will cost retailers approx. $2.2 billion, up from $1.9 billion.
  • Nine in 10 retailers surveyed said they have experienced the return of stolen merchandise.
