There are several major “players” in the California Carnival scene. With approx. 38 million residents and many more visitors, the state offers great business opportunities for companies providing entertainment. A nearly year-round outdoor paradise means that it’s possible to have a carnival or special event in December, January, February or just about any month. Look at the success of Disneyland during the “off” season and you’ll wonder what’s off about the lines of people on a sunny, winter day, waiting to get on amusement rides.  For cities that don’t have the privilege of year round carnivals and amusement parks the visiting carnival at local festivals and fairs is a family tradition popular with kids, parents and grandparents. We’ve interviewed families who tell us they come to the county fair carnival each year and have done so for decades.

One highly-respected carnival company is Butler Amusements, founded in 1970 by George Butler, wife Evalyn, and son Earl. Making its debut at a shopping center in Mountain View, California, that winter the Butlers signed their first fair contract at the Redwood Empire Fair in Ukiah. In 2016 they are booked for 36 fairs and festivals in California, plus others throughout the Western U.S.  Here are some fun carnivals on the Butler Amusements roster for 2016.
