VACAVILLE, CALIF.–When the Central Valley roadside fruit stand next to Lincoln Highway opened in 1921, it naturally grew as did the quality nuts, fruits and produce that Edwin and Helen Powers sold to the public passing by. Their efforts were the start of something big–something called Nut Tree. By the time Nut Tree company closed in 1996, hundreds of employees and millions of visitors lamented the loss of a tradition and delicious foods ranging from restaurant meals to colorful candies and snacks.

Some of that history has been preserved–photographs, ephemera, and branded objects were gifted to the Vacaville Museum (vacavillemuseum.org) and are on display through Jan. 31, 2013 in an exhibit: Nostalgic Nut Tree.  Bound to stir fond memories for those who flew into the Nut Tree Airport and rode the train to the toy store or sampled hand decorated honey cookies, even those who have never heard of the institution will be amazed to learn about the California institution and its 75 year journey.
