Victorian Village of Ferndale on Cal Coast is a Trip Back in Time

Published on: April 22, 2012

If you like out of the way places and old-fashioned charm, Ferndale, Calif. has your name written all over it. The Victorian Village of Ferndale on the North Redwood Coast is a step back in time evidenced by many pre-20th century houses, Bed & Breakfast inns and shops. Giant redwoods that surround them were a ready source for building the town’s structures.

To retain the flavor of its historic village, Ferndale hosts events you can’t duplicate in metropolitan cities– such as the  Kinetic Sculpture Race, Ice Cream Social, Cow Chip Bingo, Annual Goat Show, Cow Town Film Festival, Lighted Tractor Parade, Victorian Christmas and Lighting of the Nation’s Tallest Living Christmas Tree. There are also ample  “feeds”, sing-alongs, races and rides showcasing community spirit.   With over 40 inches of rain annually be sure to take an umbrella and jacket, and check before you go: Chamber of Commerce (victorianferndale.com). Rain seldom cancels events held in the village.

Nearby sights include drives through the redwood forests, a stop by Loleta Cheese Factory, plus visits to museums, the zoo, and additional exciting Victorian architecture in nearby Eureka. Adventuresome travelers can hike the Lost Cost several miles from the Victorian village in a wilderness experience along the Pacific Ocean.
