OB Stands for Ocean Beach! Everybody Knows That

Published on: April 21, 2012

It’s not your fault if you’re not a local and don’t know the monikers of some popular California beach destinations such as OB, PB, HB, MB, SC or LA (Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, Hermosa Beach or Huntington Beach, Santa Cruz, Los Angeles.) People are crazy about their beaches and symbols and that’s especially true for San Diego’s OB. From its iconic pier, funky downtown shops and car decals with the letters “OB” on them, tread lightly or go boldly when you visit this time warp, a throw back to the days of Gidget. Surfing, sand volleyball and walking the dog are a few beach activities that the enclave in San Diego’s massive city of over one million cherish.  It is one of a handful of beaches scattered along miles of shoreline but to locals, Ocean Beach is its own community filled with civic pride.

Visiting Ocean Beach:

  • Dog beach welcomes your furry pet.
  • Surfboard rentals and lessons available.
  • Sand volleyball courts.
  • Free fishing off California’s 2nd longest pier.
  • Tattoos, music, clothes & food at downtown shops.
  • Bike rentals available.
  • Some hotels and lots more nearby!
  • Plenty of events — Kite Festival, Holiday Parade, etc.
  • Upcoming: OB Beach Ball  May 19, 2012 – Microbrew Beer Garden, action sports, music (oceanbeachsandiego.com); OB Street Fair & Chili Cook-off June 23, 2012; Farmers Market every Wednesday
