Watermelon Festival returns to California for its 54th year of sweet, juicy fun. Contest favorites are also back — watermelon eating contest and watermelon relay race. Mark your calendar for Aug. 13-14, 2016 and head for San Fernando to celebrate one of the state’s finest, home-grown foods.
Watermelon is not the largest cash crop in California (annual value ranges from $75 million to $90 million) but that’s a big bite of the business for growers who in recent years have found seedless and organic watermelons increasing in popularity and demand. California continues to produce the most watermelon of any U.S. state. According to National Watermelon Report for the first week of August 2016 demand for San Joaquin Valley watermelon is STRONG; cantaloups MODERATE and Honeydews FAIRLY LIGHT.
