HUNTINGTON BEACH is gearing up for the annual Vans US Open of Surfing July 26-August 3, 2014. Waves are currently 1-2 feet and the weather is a toasty 80-something degrees. The surfing, skate and BMX festival promises to be a family-friendly event returning to its roots as a surf competition first and foremost. The city, event planner and local police have mechanisms in place to avoid a replay of last year’s riot. Free concerts on the beach have been eliminated, helping to curb the crowds that overburdened the city’s infrastructure in 2013. Though many HB hotels are sold out this weekend, there are hotels in Long Beach, Newport Beach and other cities nearby not far from the action!
