Herding horses and mules between the winter range in the Owens Valley and Pack Station in the High Sierra is an adventure guests have talked about since 1968 when the first Horse Drives began offering novices a real adventure. The exciting four day rides are not for everyone, however. You should have some time in the saddle, though being an expert is not required. Most Californians actually can find access to horseback riding to get in shape for the trip. When you climb off the horse the first time, you instantly understand why it's important to have some riding time under your belt. Toward the end of your day's journey the cook and camp crew have a comfortable camp set up in advance of arrival. Just bring your sleeping bag and personal gear.

Among the varied trips are journey several times to see the "living legacy" wild mustangs, spring horse drives, easy-going parent/child trail rides, golden trout trail rides, John Muir trail rides, 4th of July and holiday specials and more. Because the rides take place in the national forest, they are subject to service fees that you'll be requested to pay when you book your trip. Rides aren't cheap but they're unforgettable events you should try if you can.

Getting there: : 24 miles north of Bishop take Rock Creek Lake Exit from U.S. 395. Go 10 miles up paved road.
